Mochiyomi, a reading aid for Japanese, Chinese and Korean

A Japanese sentence in Mochiyomi with furigana above the kanji and a dictionary popup for 読みます (to read), with its reading in kana and rōmaji

I grew up partly in Japan and used to speak excellent Japanese, but I haven’t used it much in a long time, turns out it’s hard to “just pick it back up” after 20 years! So I built some help.

Mochiyomi is a replacement for the reading tools I remember using back in the day. You paste in Japanese, Chinese or Korean text, it shows how the words are read, and you can hover or tap any word for translations.

It’s for anyone learning (or re-learning!) a language, who wants to read real text without stopping to look up every word. You can learn from real content, it’s free to use, and doesn’t log or track what you’re reading.

(Please note Chinese and Korean are very early as I am a lot less able to test them, feedback is very welcome)
